When Steve and Cheryl bought their home, they knew they wanted to remodel. Their goal was to update the overall feel of the 2006 built home and turn the main level into a space that fit what they needed for their home. They wanted to expand the kitchen and find a way to bring in more natural light without losing cabinet and storage space, along with finding a better use for their unused formal dining room. We worked with Invision Design and Render to create a space that met these goals.
To create more working space in the kitchen, we expanded the kitchen into the previous laundry space. Then we converted the unused formal dining room into a laundry and craft room. In the new laundry room, we built walls to enclose the space and filled it with white painted maple cabinets including a desk area and a recessed, wall to wall storage cabinet. The room was then finished with a stacked washer and dryer, drop-in sink, and hanging space.
In the kitchen, we installed a seven-foot window to fill the space with more natural light. To increase the cabinet space, we installed rich maple-stained cabinets that extend to the ceiling and built a walk-in pantry with a pocket door for additional storage. We also redesigned the island, added a prep sink area, and finished the kitchen with new quartz countertops and matching quartz backsplash to give the space an updated and modern feel.
To tie the new, modern look of the kitchen and laundry room into the rest of the main floor, the previous golden oak colonial-style trim was replaced with mocha-stained craftsman-style millwork. We also replaced the previous kitchen desk built-in with an updated hutch and installed a matching custom built-in foyer bench. To create a standout feature for the main floor, a custom-built wood hearth and a white oak, split-face stone surround was added to the existing three-sided fireplace. Lastly, a wood and iron staircase railing was installed to add a final modern touch.
